ROCK

Most of my intertidal creations are short-lived by design, but transience is relative. As I play on the beach in the presence of the totem rock and glacial erratic pictured below, it is me who is the transient one by comparison.

I am in awe of these two that have been in communion with one another for millennia. While the totem rock was carved out in situ, the boulder traveled hundreds of miles to reach this location thanks to glacial movement.

They must find my simple stoneworks amusing, much like elders sitting back and chatting about the old days as they watch children play.

Sometimes these gestures with stones serve to define an intertidal contour. Other times, they memorialize a life lived, such as the Lion’s mane jellies that wash up on the beach. And still other times, they are simply decorative in the oft chance of catching someone’s eye.
