TIDEFLAT DIAL

September 2023 - May 2024

The tideflat dial is composed of fifty-six bricks, some whole, some broken, that the tides delivered to the beach near our cabin over the years. Many were already homes to barnacles that endured continual tumbling from the waves. Now they are nestled into the mud in a circular formation that suggests a compass or a sundial.

The video footage above documents the installation in September. What began as a morning’s idle evolved into a sort of penance as the hot sun burned overhead and the endless back-and-forth tramplings in the mud with bricks in hand accumulated. Fortunately, I finished in the “nick of tide.”

Below are documentary photos from the installation day through the subsequent months as the dial settled in, including a great blue heron who presided over the process.

UPDATE EARLY MAY: The mudflat appears to have engulfed the dial.
